There is the degree of hospitality that a host and guests would expect which includes a 3-course lunch in the Shoot Room where 20 or so can be seated before a roaring log fire, with sporting prints and shooting memorabilia on the walls. This 1,500 acre or so estate off the A12 north of Chelmsford was one of the first to sign up with shooting4all. A good many of our clients have GOT to know it well over the years. It came under new management for the 2005/6 season and we were pleased to continue our relationship. The terrain offers classic partridges but also some challenging pheasants. With excellent hospitality arranged by the husband and wife management team, it is as ideal for travelling syndicates and the like, as for single guns - who are made very welcome - and small groups. There is shooting most Saturdays and Wednesdays and therefore plenty of dates to choose from. The shoot concentrates on 200 bird days for 8 guns with breakfast on arrival, a field snack at mid-day or thereabouts, and a hot buffet after the last drive. Full days are for sale by negotiation at circa £22 per bird.

It has been used extensively for corporate entertaining because of the excellent hospitality and quality of shooting, when high number bird days are offered, but we are offering mid-week opportunities of 150-plus bird days at £22 per bird plus VAT. This is a long established pheasant and partridge shoot of some 1,200 acres in the undulating countryside of North Essex, not far from Halstead. It has had a selective breeding programme since 1975 which has resulted in year on year bookings by satisfied clients, delighted with some of the "high fliers". While there are some 150 acres of woodland set out for shooting in the early 1900's , many of the drives are from cover crops. Now in the care of the former keeper to Lord Brabourne in Kent, it grows from strength to strength. Lunch is included and there is excellent accommodation nearby.

EAST SUSSEX (near Bodiam)
This private well wooded shoot of about 500 acres has hosted a good many S4A clients over the years and with no complaints and comes well recommended. Apart from the beautiful countryside in the old manor of Bodiam Castle, it is easy to get to being a short drive from the A21 main London-Hastings road. It is one of the few shoots on our books which offers driven days with estimated bags from 75 or up to 200 if required, at a cost of £22 per bird with no vat, so caters for all sorts. A pub breakfast can be arrange at reasonable cost but guns are expected to bring a packed lunch. There are normally 8, with a maximum of 9 guns standing.

KENT (Duck shooting)
This private shoot over some 500 acres not far from Harrietsham offers what the owners call some "real skyscrapers" although there are plenty of opportunities for less experienced guns. In a very rural position, the land is heavily contoured and drives are mainly off about 10 spring fed ponds and lakes, with birds often coming from high ground and lofting over trees. While the estate is re-stocked each season, there are plenty of wild birds and human interference is kept to a minimum. Some days may include a partridge drive.

This is classic, high partridge country and a long established and very popular shoot near Newhaven over about 1,700 acres of rolling downs with deep valleys. Most drives are from cover, with the birds being driven across deep valleys. The early season is exclusively partridges and mixed partridge and pheasant from November. The hospitality is excellent with lunch taken in the farmhouse. Individual pegs and whole days available.

This 2000 acre estate near Heathfield is laid out for some 30 drives so offers plenty of alternatives for guns who want more than one day. The land is well wooded with plenty of water and offers very good pheasant shooting combined with excellent driven duck. This is a mainly private and family shoot, which has been in the family for three generations, and is close to Womenswold near Canterbury. The land is downland, slightly undulating and wooded, over some 2000 acres and - while the days are mixed pheasant and partridge - the shoot is particularly well known for its partridges. To add variation to the sport, it is not unknown for them to come out of woodland. There are normally 5 drives although sometimes 6 and lunch is generally taken in the shoot room in the converted granary after the first 3 or so drives. Yesterday's shoot (January 2006) at Denne Hill was absolutely first class. Nine good drives, supersonic partridge and lively pheasants; really excellent lunch and great hospitality. Didn't quite make the hundred birds due solely to our inability to hit them, but we saw plenty and fired more than our entitlement of shots! Roddy (the estate owner) was a gem, an absolute gentleman and tolerant of our misses. All his team were equally friendly and courteous and I don't think the day could have been more enjoyable. This 2000 acre estate, just outside the ancient country town of Tenterden, is over beautiful, undulating land. It presents almost every change in terrain one could wish for, from Wealden uplands, old ghylls (deep gullies) and ancient woodlands, to marsh and open water approaching the Romney Marsh. The days are properly organised but with a degree of informality. Guns are encouraged to get to know the beaters and pickers-up and, whilst it is driven pheasant shooting - often with some wild duck - teams of up to 10 are acceptable, when it is usual to have one or two walking guns on each drive. Days include breakfast, a field lunch, and tea and cakes on departure. A more formal meal can be arranged.

The shoot is located in the heart of the Cotswolds. The estate has more than 20 drives with mature woodland at it’s heart and steep-sided banks and gullies. The most famous and popular drive is The Gully which makes for some truly fast and furious birds. This shoot refuses to be a commercial shoot with the pleasure and enjoyment of the guns being paramount. Dinner at the end of the day is laid on at The Treehouse (yes it really is a tree house but better than the any I’ve ever seen (ed.)) and will nearly always be food from the estate itself. KENT (S/E Tunbridge Wells)
We have a select number of 150/200 bird days on this estate close to the East Sussex border, where most of the shooting is sold year on year with repeat bookings foam travelling syndicates and corporate organisations. The estate, while large and over several thousand acres, occupies a very rural position, and most of the 30 or so drives are accessed by private roads and farm tracks in the gun bus. The land has been crafted for game bird shooting over many years and is undulating, and extremely well wooded. The bags are normally about 70% pheasant, with duck and some partridges and a number of drives present spectacular birds.The days offered do not include lunch but this is available as an extra with good wines in the shoot room before an open fire, at an additional £15 per gun. Non-shooting guests are most welcome and ladies have their own facilities.

This shoot near Canterbury, run by Ian Golding, features a good mixture of drives. From standing among the trees on pheasant drives to open partridge drives across a delightful peice of the Kent countryside. Although this is a new shoot for Ian this season, if the shooting is as good as at his previos shoot on The Romney Marshes, you will see some excellent shooting. Whole days and some syndicate spaces are still available.

This 1,500 acre estate has the benefits of sensibly priced shooting, old fashioned hospitality, and easy accessibility for London or home counties based guns as it is not far from junction 25 of the M25. The shooting is over moderately undulating land, with drives out of both cover crops and woodland with the bags a mix of pheasants and partridges. Bags can be varied according to your requirements but are normally circa 200 to 250 and the cost is £23 p/b plus Vat. Even very experienced shots will be thrilled by some birds from the challenging Summit Drive on this 3000 acre private estate. Here is pheasant shooting at its best, the equal of much found in Devon or North Wales, and yet easily accessible from London and in prime countryside of lakes and ancient oak woodlands, set among the surrounding hills south of Haslemere. There are two very exclusive syndicates who shoot the estate but a small number of circa 300 bird let days are sold. Visitors are offered not only exciting sport, with some partridges and duck in the drives, but also light breakfast on arrival, field hospitality, and a 5-course private lunch in the farm house. Each departing guest is presented with a brace of oven ready pheasants and more are available at low cost.

SOMERSET (Exmoor)
Few shoots offer famed high birds yet sensible bags, combined with really top class hospitality and all at reasonable cost. Although available to all types of sporting gun, we would say that this private shoot on Exmoor near Exford is absolutely ideal for corporate entertainment. The estate is crossed by two valleys from which birds rocket over the lower ground but the cost is only £27 a bird (no vat).
Hospitality starts with reception and pegs in the estate's Georgian pile, followed by up to six drives during the day interspersed with a field lunch, then back to dinner at the house which normally includes roast beef from the farm's herd for £30. October days can be pre-booked at a discount.
For guns and guests who need to overnight - and mini bus transport if required - a local hotel can be booked exclusively for the party and it supplies everything from a drying room to a secure gun room and a light supper at the very end of the day. The following days are for sale as 150 or 200 bird days and bags - predominantly pheasant - will include partridge, duck, sometimes snipe and woodcock, and the occasional guinea fowl.

This shoot is one of those finds for which S4A is well known. Despite having some 2000 acres in hand, it makes a very reasonable charge for guns to go out on circa 80 bird driven days with 8 guns with a mixture of partridges (both English and French) and pheasants plus - on some drives - hares. On some days, there will be evening duck and goose flighting at extra cost. Very few shoots allow ground game, but this is one of those exceptions. It does, however, expect only safe, experienced guns to take part. Transport will be supplied, but your own 4x4 will be welcome. Lunch is not included and guns are expected to bring a pack lunch. Two guns are available on each of the advertised dates.

This 800 acre shoot near Taunton is typical of those in which S4A specialises. Quite laid back - certainly not over pretentious - low bag numbers, but a mix of normal to challenging birds. The bags, of from 100 to 150, are virtually all pheasant with a few partridges and possibly the occasional duck. They go out any day of the week, to suit the requirements of the guns, and tend to shoot through until about 2.30 pm with a field lunch after the first couple of drives or so. A more substantial lunch after shooting is available, as an option. Birds are from both woodlands and cover crops over moderately undulating terrain. There is a resident syndicate and only a limited number of let days.

This family run, commercial shoot over some 500 acres, offers classic Devon pheasant and partridges in the surroundings for which the county's sport is world famous. Whereas there are birds to suit most experienced shots, there are some presented at a height when a ratio of six cartridges to one will not disgrace the most able gun. This can be said in particular of one of the two quarry drives where, to add to the occasion, a picker up plies his trade from a boat. The land, near Lifton, is well wooded and bordered partly by the river Tamar and the all in cost of £25 per bird includes lunch (up to 22 can be seated) in the Georgian farm house. The days are normally sold well in advance of the season but we have some with bags of 200 upwards suitable for up to 10 guns.

This is a private shoot of over 300 acres near Bideford, very popular with shooters in the immediate area, which offers a few let days each year to S4A clients. These are driven days, mainly pheasant , but other species depending on weather. The land offers a variety of habitats and features, and the days include challenging snap shooting in woodland and birds out of woods, hedges and some wetland. The bag is normally around the 100 mark with the accent on having an enjoyable day's shooting in enjoyable company of the beaters and pickers-up.

With the land rising to around 600 feet in parts and deep valleys, this 1,700 acre estate near Colyton presents respectable pheasants. The shoot is run by an owner/keeper with a 300 year family tradition and he offers mainly cover crop drives, but some out of strips of woodland where there are 9 release pens. A number of let days of from 100 to 200 birds are for sale, to be taken preferably mid-week but Saturday shoots are welcome. Considering the location, the price - on application - is very reasonable but does not include lunch. This can be booked at a nearby pub and there is also affordable B & B in the immediate vicinity.

ISLE OF WIGHT
Those who have shot on the Isle of Wight will know of some of the excellent sport there, although there are a limited number of estates. This 650 acre private estate near Yarmouth is no exception, and is easy to get to. It has seen some hard work put in under the watchful eye of the Game Conservancy and presents challenging birds, both from cover crops on an escarpment and in the 200 acres or so of woodland. Non toxic cartridges will be provided at cost on the riverside drives. We can offer a few days, preferably Tuesday or Wednesday, of mainly pheasants, but including some partridge, woodcock and duck. The cost is £3,200 for the full day for 8 guns who can expect a bag of circa 120 birds, with lunch served in the main house. Additional guests for lunch are welcome at £15 a head. The simple way to get to the shoot is drive to Lymington, park, and board the ferry to Yarmouth as foot passengers. You will, by arrangement, be picked up at the ferry terminal in Yarmouth.

It is a pheasant shoot and is heavily wooded, with birds taken from clearings and surrounding fields, but it also presents some exciting "snap" shooting in the woods. The emphases is on smaller bags, of around 100 to 150 birds, at a competitive price and with lunch available as an option and at additional cost in a village pub.

NORTH WALES (not far from Welshpool)
This 2000 acre or so partridge/pheasant shoot which is on a 4,500 acre estate is known for challenging birds, albeit at a price which can be very favourably compared to others in the area and, for example, in Devon. The owner calls the height of birds "pretty useful" and guns who can average 4 shots to 1 - particularly on the partridges -can consider themselves above average. The land is very undulating, going from about 100 feet above sea level to some 470 feet. There are about 30 blocks of woodland, varying from 65 to 3 acres which, with 14 release pens and with cover crops, allows at least 30 different drives. There are also 5 flight ponds but these are essentially for wild fowling - teal in particularly - and the shoot presents few or no driven duck on any of the drives. There are, however, good wood cock figures with 39 flushed on one drive in early December 2005.
We have a number of 100 to 200 bird Friday let days for sale by negotiation. There is a possibility of other days but not Saturdays as these are reserved for the resident syndicate. The 2006/7 price is £23 per bird plus Vat.

This shoot specialises in showing the high birds for which this part of Wales is famous but this is not reflected in the cost. Much of the 800-acre estate has been in the same family since the early 20th century and has resulted in a tradition of care for guests and the development of a topography designed for fine sport. The owner refers to the undulating terrain of valleys and wooded slopes as “quite spectacular” and pheasants at 150 feet are par for the course with the 17th century and part Georgian mansion at the centre of the estate, adding the finishing touch to the hospitality. The cost of birds includes all hospitality and the configuration of drives allows for up to 10 pegs. There are opportunities for single guns/ small groups and syndicates.

A titled family owns this long established sporting estate of some 3000 acres and much of the shooting is the preserve of them and their friends. However, some let days are available each year in the charge of the estate manager and these include lunch in the Old Billiard Room. The land is classic partridge country but, with some 100 acres of woodland in two blocks and other shaws and spinneys, there are some pheasants and the day normally includes a pheasant drive. Transportation between drives is by shoot bus and, as well as lunch taken throughout the season at about 1 pm, there is a mid-morning refreshment break and tea and cakes at the end of the day. Whereas all sporting guns are welcome, this estate lends itself ideally to corporate entertainment with anticipated bags of from 200 to 300 birds, and it is easily accessible from a large area of the UK including London and the Midlands.

Hansom Sporting have available quality driven pheasant or partridge (or mixed) days.
These days are available for £27 per bird over 6000 acres of the finest Northumberland countryside with back to back days often available - applications from single guns or small groups are also welcome. Also available are Walk and stand days of 50 birds for £1200 per team as well as some duck flighting.

This estate also offers stalked or high seat roe deer for £85 per buck or £70 per doe. Novices are welcome and an estate rifle is available for use to suit occasional shooters and foreign shooters who don't want to have to bring their own rifle to the UK.
