THE KINGS WALK SHOOT,
West Dean
|
|
|
In his book "The Great Shoots" author Brian
P Martin singled out THE KINGS WALK SHOOT at West Dean not far from
MIDHURST in West Sussex as one of particular importance in South East
England. Among the more famous guests were the Czar of Russia, King
Alfonso of Spain and George V when he was Prince of Wales. But the
most famous guest was King Edward VII for whom the shoot and his
favourite drive, The Kings Stand, was named. The Modern day King's Stand
and other drives on The King's Walk Shoot present similarly challenging
birds now as Edward would have met in his day. |

The 2000 acre estate has this year been stocked with a total of 32,000 birds
made up of 24,000 pheasants and 8,000 partridges and is under the day to
day management of Mick Mann, the shoot owner, who is a keeper of over 30
years experience. While 500 bird days are available and corporate
hospitality is a speciality, excellent shooting and hospitality is available
to both groups and single guns seeking 200 or more bird days. The season
starts in September with partridge only days and then offers mixed pheasant
and partridge from early October.

We have a Saturday and Monday syndicate. Full guns, half guns and individual guns are
all welcome on the above days. Starting with partridge only days in September, mixed
partridges and pheasant in October, and pheasant days from November onwards. We also
have whole days available - often on the day of your choice - for both corporate teams
and roving syndicates, as well as for the host who wants to fill a day with his friends.
All days are based on bags of from 150 to 500 birds. Drives are taken in such a way
that up to 10 guns can be stood, but we also work on lower numbers such as 6 guns if
teams are made up of very experienced shots.

TRANSPORT AND SAFETY
Transport by 4WD vehicles can be arranged with a minimum of 10 days notice.
Loaders can be arranged for the bigger days if required. Also, for novice
guns on corporate days, we can supply experienced coaches to help with
instruction and safety.
CLAY SHOOTING
Total novices are welcome. We can supply guns, cartridges and tuition. We hope by the end of
the day we will get all you beginners to hit a clay or two. We can also offer simulated game
bird shooting with clays throughout the summer months run on a similar basis to a formal
driven bird day. Also, for clients booking corporate driven days, we can offer clay shooting
with instructors on the previous afternoon if required. Accommodation can be arranged at
local hotels.
